چکیده

In this report, particular attention is paid to the inclusion bodies found in the apical cytoplasm of the pigment epithelial cell. These bodies are of variable size and form. The smallest (0.4 micro diameter) consist of a granular matrix enclosed by a single membrane, and are similar to the lysosomes of hepatic cells. Larger inclusion bodies contain areas of lamellated material in addition to granular matrix. The largest particles seen (2 micro diameter) are almost entirely lamellar. These different forms seem closely related, for it is possible to find all transitional stages between the smallest and largest particles. The relationship between the lamellar inclusion bodies and the rod outer segments is discussed.

Morphological changes in injured retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptor cells after transplantation of stem cells into subretinal space

Introduction: Degenerative retinal diseases are main cause of irreversible blindness. Stem cells therapy is a promising way in these diseases. Therefore, mesenchymal stem cells because of its safety can produce degenerated cells and can play important role in treatment. The aim of this study was to examine morphological changes in injured retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptor cells...

Histochemical study of retinal photoreceptors development during pre- and postnatal period and their association with retinal pigment epithelium

Objective(s):The aim of this study was to evaluate distribution and changes of glycoconjugates of retinal photoreceptors during both pre- and postnatal development. Materials and Methods: Tissue sections from days 15 to 20 of Wistar rat embryos and 1 to 12 postnatal days of rat newborns including developing eye were prepared for lectinhistochemistry technique. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-label...

Neural Stem Cell-based Intraocular Administration of Pigment Epithelium-derived Factor Promotes Retinal Ganglion Cell Survival and Axon Regeneration after Optic Nerve Crush Injury in Rat: An Experimental Study

Background: Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) is regarded as a multifunctional protein possessing neurotrophic and neuroprotective properties. PEDF has a very short half-life, and it would require multiple injections to maintain a therapeutically relevant level without a delivery system. However, multiple injections are prone to cause local damage or infection. To overcome this, we chose...

A new, albino-beige mouse: giant granules in retinal pigment epithelium.

Albino-beige mice were produced in order to combine two experimentally useful characteristics, albinism and lysosomal dysfunction, in the same animal. The retinal pigment epithelium of albino-beige mice formed giant intracellular granules. Exposure of albino-beige mice to white light of 150 foot-candles for 3 to 10 hr induced marked phagocytosis of rod outer segment fragments by the retinal pig...

Essential fatty acid deficiency and renewal of rod outer segments in the albino rat.

Biochemical studies in albino rats fed a lab chow diet (control) showed a 9 to 10 day turnover time for rhodopsin in rod photoreceptor membranes, whereas the turnover time in animals raised on a fat-free diet (experimental) was not easily measurable. The number of phagosomes in the pigment epithelium of the control group was three times that found in the experimetals. These studies support earl...
